Chapter 13 homework

CH 13 section 1:
1.Major economic changes are taking place in Europe because of technology, manufacturing and agriculture lolz.
     2. Since the fall of communism, outdated equipment and lack of incentive resulted in low crop yields. Since the change to democracy, private ownership of land and food production has risen.
Creative Writing: I agree with the statement - it is more important for nations to develop more efficient communications systems than to develop more efficient transportation systems. Some barriers like mountains cant be broken down, its just impossible. Europe needs to focus on connecting these places through technology instead of thorough roads and transportation systems.

CH 13 section 2:
1.Over-farming, removing too much vegetation and building cities using many trees has affected Europe's environment.
2.The EU has helped protect the environment using power plants that burn natural gas instead of lignite coal. The EU has also built buildings with acid-resistant coatings.
Creative Writing: I disagree with that statement about the EU laws. People need to pitch in too and not destroy the environment and use it up slowly. People need to think twice about how much water they use during the day and how much electricity they use up per month. The laws can only do so much, but its the people that can make the biggest difference.

Chapter 12 homework

Chapter 12 section 1:
1.Immigration over the past 100 years has influenced populations in Northern Europe because since islands have welcomed immigrant communities, the populations have increased.
2.Large areas of harsh terrain or climate has led to people living along the coast.
Creative Writing: The advantages of living in a welfare state is that you get excellent health care and complete social welfare programs funded by the government. A disadvantage/advantage is that you have to go to school for at least 10 years.

CH 12 section 2:
     1. Religions have effected the history and government of Western Europe because of World War II, the Roman Empire, and the Crusades.
     2. Because of WWII, immigration has led to urban growth. Immigrants have moved to cities for new opportunities.
Creative Writing: The fact that Western Europe provides medical care, maternity and retirement benefits, and other services, the population in Western Europe is aging, with declining birthrates and death rates. This is good in the short term, but not in the long term. Western Europe faces diminishing resources and over population. The problem is that they aren't just going to cut off these resources so the population wont grow as fast because that is just to controversial.

CH 12 ection 3:
1.Because immigration has outpaced emigration, many people are moving to urban areas. More people live along around the coast too.
2.Most people in Southern Europe share the same kind of education, sports, and religion-Roman Catholic.
Creative Writing: During the ancient Rome period, advances that remain today were made. Breakthroughs in government and law effected Europe today. Its capitals have made these places popular tourist destinations. the Renaissance gave people the freedom to study, and pursue new ways of thinking.

Chapter 11 homework

CH 11 section 1:
     1. The Alps mountain range is affected by glaciation; Mt. Etna is affected by volcanic activity; and the Italian Peninsula is affected by wind.
     2. Rivers are vital to Europe's economy becuase they provide irrigation, electricity, and transportation of people and goods.

Creative Writing: Countries along the Rhine river have faced water supply, flooding, water quality, energy production, transport and institutional arrangements

CH 11 section 2:
     1. Major influences on Europe's climate are it's northern latittude and its proximity to the sea.
     2. Winds affect the climates of Europe by carrying air to the different climate zones.

Creative Writing: The average high winter temperatures can be so different becuase one city is closer to the sea, so it gets cooler air.

Chapter 10 homework

CH 10 section 1:
     1. The basis of the economies of many Latin American countries is selling goods to other countries.
     2.  The causes of Latin America’s economically dependent status are unevenly distributed farmland, economic inequality, and dependence upon export products. The consequences are if droughts, floods, or volcanic eruptions destroy a countries cash crop, the damage to that countries economy causes great hardship.

Creative Writing: NAFTA has helped boost exports, increase international investments, and create new jobs. However, none of the benefits of the trade agreement flow down to the poor.

CH 10 section 2:
     1. Development has affected Latin America’s forest resources by cutting them down through deforestation.
     2.  The challenges that are posed by the growth of Latin America’s urban population are some people are forced to live in shantytowns that are often located on dangerous slopes or wetlands.

Creative Writing: Two challenges of regional and international significance in Latin America is deforestation and rapid urban growth. If deforestation is allowed, there will be less oxygen in the atmosphere and it will be harder to breathe. Also, with rapid urban growth, there won't be enough room in the cities, and people will be forced to move to shantytowns.

Chapter 8 homework

CH 8 section 1:
     1. geographers divided the large region that is known as Latin America into Middle America, the Caribbean, and South America. (the largest masses)
     2. Oil and natural gas make Latin America an economically important region.

Creative Writing: People use rivers to transporting people and goods to other places in the region and other areas of the world. The rivers also provide commercial water routes between cities in the region and hydroelectric power.

CH 9 section 2:
     1. Latin America has a mostly tropical climate with lush vegetation.
     2. Latin America's coasts consist of mostly a tropical dry climates and the omre inland you go, the wetter it gets. The inland consists of mostly tropical wet and humid subtropical climates. Also, in areas with mountains, the climate is usually cooler and have rich natural resources.

Creative Writing: Today, I entered a tropical wet climate. Warm, moist air is carried throughout the land on prevailing winds and heavy rains drenches much of the densely forested lowlands throughout the year. Also, the region has very rich vegetation and the trees grow close, forming a canopy.

Chapter 7 homework

CH 7 section 1:
     1. The development of a postindustrial economy in the United States and Canada has affected where and how people live by reducing the need for an agricultural economy. Postindustiral economys can be located anywhere and is similar to that of a person's choice of where to live. Weather, proximity to work, and access recreational centers are key influences of where postindustrial economies choose for location.
     2. Expanding trade between countries around the world has led to a global economy, the merging of economies in ehich countries are interconnected and become dependant on one another for goods and services.

Creative Writing:  Market economies are economies that allow people to own, operate, and profit from their own businesses. This is much like postidustrial economies because in both you choose where you want you business to be and you operate it the way you want to. These are both related to a global economy because you can get things and materials for your business from other countries around the globe.

CH 7 section 2:
     1.  Examples of three or more ways that the United States and Canada could manage their natural resources more responsibly are we could stop clear-cutting forests, overfishing in the oceans, and conversion of wetlands into urban lands for agricultural uses.
     2. The causes of pollution are when cars, power plants, and factories release chemical emissions that react with water vapor in the air. The affect is when acid rain corrodesstone and metal buildings, damages crops, and pollutes the soil.

Creative Writing: Some of the consequences would be possibly burning a hole right through the pipe. This would drastically changing the physical features of the area. It wouldmelt the ice, causing the oceans to become bigger, much like global warming. Also, since gas in a nonrenewable resource, it would be gone much faster.

Chapter 6 homework

CH 6 section 1:
     1. Population patterns in the United States are influenced by the region’s physical geography and by the development of industry and technology because the immigrants are drawn towards the sunbelt, where it has a mild climate and maunfacturing, service, and tourism industries flourish.
     2. Four cultural elements influenced by the immigrant roots of the United States are language and religion, eduscation and health care, the arts, and family life.

Creative Writing: An early settler in 1845 would be bewildered and excited when he reached New York Harbor with his family. He would find a job in one of the growing industries of the time and would be supported for the rest of his life. He would have a job that would support his family and owuld have a nice, steady income of money until his death at the age of seventy.

CH 6 section 2:
     1. Two economic factors that encouraged growth of Canada’s western population are Klondike Gold Rush and the fertile soil of the prairie provinces.
     2. The country’s religious practices and languages reflect the immigrant history of Canada by reflecting the history of power struggles between british and french sttlers and their descendants.

Creative Writing:  The history and development of Canada would have been very different. The british would have taken over and ruled Canada, forcing all the french out. This would drasticaly alter the language and religion of Canada, and it would be very differet than it is today.

Chapter 5 homework

CH 5 section 1:
     1. River systems and landforms of the United States and Canada played important roles in this region’s development by satisfying the needs of cities and rural areas, providing power for homes and industries,  and moving resources across the country.
     2. Some of the major geographical factors and natural resources that have played an important part in the economic development of the United States and Canada are fossil fuels, minerals, timber, fishing, and ample ammounts of freshwater.

Creative Writing: The landforms that would be visible from an airplane window if you were flying across North America, from Norfolk, Virginia, to Seattle, Washington would be mountains, plains, and plateaus. You would also see waterways, such as rivers and lakes.

CH 5 section 2:
     1. The climate regions found in the United States and Canada are interior, coastal, warm and wet, warm and dry, and high-latitude climates.
     2. Three of the weather-related hazards found in the United States and Canada are hurricanes, summer thunderstorms called supercells, and a warm, blizzards.

Creative Writing: Two cities at about the same latitude, such as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Salt Lake City, Utah, have widely differing climates due to their different climate regions and their different natural landforms.

Chapter 4 homework

CH 4 section 2:
     1.  The factors that define a culture are language, religion, social groups, government, economy, and cultural regions.
     2. The developments of new idea, lifestyles, and inventions have affected interaction between cultures in recent years. Also, trade, migration, and war can bring these developments.

Creative Writing: If the information revolution had not occured, cultures throughout the world would not be nearly as linked as they are today.  My day would consist of going to school, comming home and doing my homework, eating, and sleeping. That would be different than today because we would not know much about the other countries around the world, all our homework would be on paper, and there would be less trees worldwide.

CH 4 section 3:
     1. The differences between the major types of national government in the world today are some give all their key powers to the national or central government and some divide the powers of government between the national government and state governments.
     2. Examples of the major types of economic systems in the world are traditional economies, market economies, and command economies. Capitalism is an example of a market economy, and communism and socialism are examples of command economies.

Creative Writing: The advantages of living within a democratic government system and a market economy are indiciduals and private groups make decisions on what to produce and there is no central power. Also, people, as shoppers, choose what products they will or will not buy, and businesses make more of what they believe people will buy. However, some disadvantages are that governments in modern mixed economies also influence their economies by spending tax revenues to support social services.

CH 4 section 4:
     1. A major factor in determining a country’s economic development and trade relationships is its resources. Countries specialize in the economic activities best suited to thier resources.
     2. Human economic activities have affected the environment by releasing toxic elements into the air, water, and land.

Creative Writing: I disagree with the statement that “only developed countries need to replace their dependence on fossil fuels with the use of renewable energy resources.” All countries need to replace their dependance on fossil fuels with the use of renewable energy sources because once they are gone, we will never be able to get them back.

Chapter 3 homework

Ch 3 section 1:
     1. Not all planets recieve the same ammount of direct sunlight at the same time. Areas that recieve large ammounts of direct sunlight have warmer temperatures that places that recieve little sunlight. This is why Earth's position in relation to the sun affect's Earth's temperatures.
     2. Global warming affect Earth’s water by making it evaporate from oceans more quickly and increase humidity and rainfall generally. Rapid evaporation from soil will cause land to dry out more quickly between rains. Also, the increase in CO2 gas in the atmosphere will cause Earth's greenhouse affect to trap more heat.

Creative Writing: I disagree and agree with the statement "“Global warming is a natural process and there is nothing we can do to affect the severity or effects of global warming on the environment.” Global warming is caused in part by human activites, such as the burning of coal, oil, and natural gases, however, we can affect its severity. We could do this by using up less of the Earth's natural resources.

Ch 3 section 2:
     1. The regular pattern of the sun's rays can be correlated with bands, or zones, of latitude to describe climate regions. At all latitudes, elivation influences climate because of the relationship between the elevation of a place and its temperature.
     2. Wind patterns play the role of distributing the sun's energy around the planet. Ocean currents play the role of warming or cooling the surface of the land they pass. Finally, the climate of places at the same latitude can be very different, depending on the presence or absence of physical features. Lakes and other large bodies of water affect the climate of more coastal regions, and mountain ranges produce an affect known as the rain shadow. The windward side of the mountain- the side facing the wind- gets most of the moisture in the form of precipitation, and the leeward side of the mountain- the side sot facing the wind- gets warmer and drier as they descend.

Creative Writing: The european climate could become colder and drier if the North Atlantic Current was weakened or shut down permanently.

Ch 3 section 3:
     1. Geographers classify the climate regions of the world by organizing them into tropical, dry, midaltitude, high altitude, and highland.
     2. Recurring phenomena influence climate patterns over time by changing it.  When humans burn fossil fuels, gas is released that mixes with the water vapor in the air. This could destroy forests and other natural landforms, which in turn changes the climate.

Creative Writing:  Huntington Beach is a coastal region and has cool summers, and cool, damp winters. It also has mixed forests, full of coniferous and deciduous trees.

Chapter 2 Homework

Ch 2 section 1:
     1. The different surfaces and geographic features found on Earth are landforms and bodies of water. Landforms consist of man geographic features, such as continents, mountain ranges, cliffs, valleys, and deep trenches, and they often contain rivers, lakes, and streams. Bodies of water consist of oceans, lakes, rivers, peninsulas, seas, and others.
     2. The point on Earth that is the greatest distance from the sea level is the peak of Mount Everest, which is at 29,028 feet above sea level.

Creative Writing: I agree with the statement that when small objects in space, such as meteoroids and comets, enter Earth’s atmosphere, they have no long-term effect on Earth’s lithosphere, atmosphere, or biosphere. When these small objects enter the atmosphere, they burn up and either become very small or disintegrate entirely. Even if they do survive, the most they could do is make a very small crater in the lithosphere, and that can be fixed very easily. Therefore, they have no long-term affect.

Ch 2 section 2:
     1. The Earth's layers contribute to the planet's physical characteristics because tectonic plates that float on a partially melted layer in the upper portion of the mantle crash into each other, pull apart, grind, and slide past each other, changing the face of the planet.
     2. Internal forces of change affect Earth's surface differently from external forces of change because they form and alter Earth's surface, while external forces of change break it down.

Creative Writing: Internal forces may have changed the surface of what is now North America by creating landscapes through spreading and colliding playes, folds and faults, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions.

Chapter 1 Homework

CH 1 section 1:
     1. Two concerns cartographers have when selecting map projections are deciding how the map will be used and what map projection to use. When projecting the round earth onto a flat surface, the distance, shape, direction, or size may be distorted. As a result, the purpose of the map usually dictates which projection is used.
     2. Two physical features on your typical urban-area map are reliefs and rivers. Two man-made features are cities and roads, and two political features are countries and states.

Creative Writing: If I were creating a map using GIS to create a map to help choose locations for new elementary schools, knowing what the physical and man-made features of the area would be helpful. Features such as roads, rivers, mountains, and cities would be on the map.

CH 1 section 2:
     1. The major branches of geography are Physical and Human geography. Physical geography focuses on the study of the Earth's physical features. Human geography is the study of human activities and their relationship to the cultural and physical environments.
     2. Geography is used to study the location of people and places on Earth's surface and the patterns in which they are arranged.

Creative Writing: Huntington Beach is located on near the pacific ocean and is considered to be a coastal region. It's inhabitants have moved into the area over time from all over the globe to be in a nice, cool, coastal area. People have changed the area by building several homes and other buildings over time on old farmlands. Due to these actions, the people have drastically changed Huntington Beach's once natural landscape.
