Chapter 20 homework

Chapter 20 section 1:
     1. The shifting of tectonic plates has cause volcanic activity and deep lakes that run parallel to the Great Rift Valley.
     2. The landforms usually cause rivers crossing he plateaus to plunge down the escarpments in cataracts, or waterfalls.

Creative Writing: As each nation tries to take advantage of their natural resources, landforms can easily get in their way or divide them. For example, a mountain range could prevent one nation from harvesting any of their resources during winter. Other problems that come from this are competition for resources that come from landform barriers.

Chaoter 20 section 2:
     1. In addition to rainfall, ocean currents, prevailing winds, elevation, and latitude cause variations in the climate.
     2. Desert, tropical, mediterranean, subtropical, and marine coast climates are all found south of the Sahara.

Creative Writing: In America’s Great Plains and Africa’s Serengeti Plains both of these regions have some highland climate regions and grassland type vegetation. Both of the regions are have dry climate zones in a steppe. Although, Africa’s Serengeti Plain is surrounded by tropical wet climate regions and the Great Plains are engulfed by midlatitude climate and dry climate areas such as deserts.

Chapter 19 homework

CH 19 section 1:
     1. Physical geography affects farming and fishing in North Africa, Southwest Asia, and Central Asia becuase it determines which lands are suitable for farming and which are better for fishing.
     2. Improvements in transportation and communications are changing life in the region becuase they are bringing people closer together.

Creative Writing: People earn a living, communicate with each other, and travel in Southwest Asia, North Africa, and Central Asia differently than we bo in the United States and in Canada. In some parts of the Caucasus area, roads provide the only access to the outside world. Also, in Central Asia, some countries are landlocked, meaning they are almost or entirely surrounded by land. Also, good transportation and communication neworks are increasing the intereaction between many countries.

CH 19 section 2:
     1. People in the region have dealt with scarce water resources by making use of small rivers and other sources of water.
     2. The effects of some of the major environmental problems in the region are pollution. This has been cuased by the impact of war on many countries.

Creative Writing: I agree with the statement that states that it is necessary for all of the countries in North Africa, Southwest Asia, and Central Asia to cooperate to develop plans and technologies to bring more freshwater to the region. Through cooperation, these countries can develop stronger bonds and and may yield several advantages.

Chapter 17 homework

CH 17 Section1-
     1. Mountains, seas, rivers and deserts dominate North Africa, Southwest and Central Asia.
     2. The world economy is dependent on North Africa, Southwest and Central Asia becuase there are many natral resources such as diamonds, gold, minerals, oil, etc.

Creative Wriring: I agree because without water, evryone dies, without oil, the economy drops. The choice is obvious.

CH 17 Section 2-
1.The climate varies from scorching hot Saharan deserts, to rich farming grounds, to mild steepe climates.
     2. In the desert, there isn't much agricultural activity, but in steepe areas, there are lush areas of vegetation.

Creative Writing: They are very similar as to the type of crops they grow, but are dissimilar in the fact that in North America, irrigation is required, but not in southwest asia.
